ABOUT ME

The curator is an essential part of any art environment, and I believe they are a facilitator for both the artists and the public’s needs.

My motivation to become a curator began when I first began to exhibit my own artwork and started to meet and create networks with different venues and artistic individuals. The curator is the mediator in the centre of this network, and I would love to be in that position where I can talk to both the artists and the public and facilitate their needs.

I have had previous experience of being in a curator’s role through the art collective ‘Creative Transit’, which myself and a friend created. We have had numerous shows in different venues throughout Manchester that have been a challenging experience but rewarding, as the success of each show has demonstrated. From this experience, I have gained skills in time management, organizational skills, and have learnt how to assist the artists involved to the best of my ability.

My experience from exhibiting my own artwork and in helping others to exhibit theirs started an interest in the audience’s relationship with contemporary art. My dissertation; ‘pARTicipation; the role of the audience in contemporary art’, was an in-depth guide of the role the audience plays and how the artists and curators can accommodate and exploit participation. The key factors I touched upon was exploring ways to enhance the audience’s experience by altering location, the type of participation required and relate-ability to the work on show.

I have graduated from an MA course in  contemporary curation in 2013. From my time on the couse i have developed a deep insight into the working of the gallery environment from my hands on experience of helping out within the Holden Gallery, and through my projects whilst on the course. I have developed skills in SPECTRUM and archiving as well as improving upon my knowledge of both art history and current contemporary issues. The ideas and information i have gained on this course have helped prepare me for a role in the future within the gallery sector.

Since graduating I am currently a volunteer curator at Art with a Heart in Altrincham. My role within this organisation is to generate and manage the internal exhibition program at AWAH and to liase with potential artists into creating a diverse show and offering unique exhibitng opportunities to emerging creatives within the local community.
